Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Liebe Freunde der Galerie,

Wir laden Sie herzlich zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung "Old Masters - Young Masters" am Freitag, dem 29. November um 19 Uhr ein.

Diese Ausstellung bildet den Abschluss einer einjährigen Kooperation der Galerie Hochdruck mit der Universität für angewandte Kunst / Abteilung Grafik und Druckgrafik. Zu ausgewählten Altmeister- Blättern z.B. von Burgkmair, Cranach, Callot, Goya, da Trento oder Ruisdael, aber auch zu ausgewählten Beispielen herausragender alter Gebrauchsgraphik (z. B. illustrierte Bücher oder Spielkarten) haben 19 Studenten sowie der Leiter der Grafikabteilung Jan Svenungsson und Senior Artist Michael Schneider Hommagen, Paraphrasen und Neuinterpretationen in direkter Auseinandersetzung mit einem persönlich ausgewählten Werk oder auch einfach im weitesten Sinne assoziative und inspirierte Werke geschaffen.

Das Spektrum der grafischen Techniken ist dabei sehr breit und reicht von den Klassikern Tuschezeichnung, Aquatinta-Radierung und Holzschnitt bis zu ausgefallenen Techniken wie Polymerhochdruck, Wandschnitt oder Kaltnadel-Radierung auf Tetrapack. Auch im Objektbereich erwartet den Besucher Spannendes und Neues: vom Spiegelobjekt (passenderweise zu einer Narziss-Darstellung aus dem italienischen Manierismus) über das Mobile bis zum Bildschirm mit animierter Computergrafik.

Alte und neue Werke werden in der Ausstellung unmittelbar gegenübergestellt. Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog. Da bei der Arbeit das Prozessuale im Vordergrund stand und sich auch noch während der Ausstellung Dinge verändern können, wird der Katalog zum Ende der Ausstellung und als abschließender Kommentar zum Projekt vorgestellt.

Dear friends of the Galerie Hochdruck,

We are pleased to invite you most cordially to the opening of the exhibition "Old Masters - Young Masters", which will take place on Friday, 29 November 2013 at 7.00 pm.

This exhibition forms the conclusion of a one-year-long cooperation between the Galerie Hochdruck and the Department for Graphics and Printmaking of the Vienna University of Applied Arts. In the course of this project the departmental director Jan Svenungsson, the Senior Artist Michael Schneider and nineteen students have engaged in a creative dialogue with Old Master prints by the likes of Burgkmair, Cranach, Callot, Goya, da Trento or Ruisdael and also with select historical examples of functional graphic art (e.g., illustrated books or old playing cards). This process has borne rich fruit both in direct artistic tributes to (‘Hommages’) and paraphrases or reinterpretations of one personally chosen print, and also in creations standing in a more allusive or associative relation to the historical sources of inspiration.

The spectrum of printmaking techniques applied by the young artists is very broad and ranges from the classical ink drawing, the aquatint etching, and the woodcut through to more unusual techniques such as the polymer relief print, the wallcut, or drypoint on Tetra Pak. The exhibition also has new and exciting works in the three-dimensional field, ranging from a mirror object (fittingly enough for an Italian Mannerist print depicting Narcissus) to mobiles and computer-animated video clips.

The old and new works are to be exhibited in direct conjunction with one another. The exhibition will be accompanied with a catalogue. As the focus of the cooperation has been and still is on the creative process, certain things may change until very close to the opening or even during the exhibition period. Consequently, the catalogue will appear at the end of this period, when it will be presented as a concluding commentary on the project as a whole.
